Miller Joins Legislative Effort to Prevent School Shootings

U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today joined in support of legislation, H.R. 751, the Protect America's Schools Act of 2013, would revitalize the Cops in Schools (CIS) grant program which has not been funded since Fiscal Year 2005. Rep. Miller said:

"The Newtown, Connecticut tragedy was a heinous act that calls all of us to action to prevent such senseless violence in the future. While some have attempted to focus this debate on actions that would not have prevented Newtown and would restrict the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens, I believe the focus of our efforts must be on what is most important -- actually protecting our children.

"To accomplish this goal I have signed on as a co-sponsor of the Protect America's Schools Act which would reinstate the Cops in Schools program and will provide grant funding to law enforcement agencies to hire and deploy officers to protect our kids in school. Every parent should be able to drop their children off at school in the morning with the knowledge that trained security officials are on site to keep them safe. Taking action on this legislation would be a step in the right direction to provide the protection our kids need."

H.R.751 was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representative Mark Meadows (NC-11). The CIS program is specifically designed to assist local law enforcement agencies in the hiring of new officers. The $30 million to pay for this critical grant program would be offset by taking unspent funds from other federal agencies and would not add to the deficit.
